Mau kakii / Pendant (Haumi/Puhoro series) 2019
This pendant takes the form of an ihu, the front section of a waka (canoe) hull. As with the waka taua (ceremonial canoe), the pendant features a pūhoro design, with is associated with strength and power. Upturned and inverted, this ihu is appropriately lashed along the edge that would be fixed to the main body of the waka, emphasising the meaning of haumi, which is to join.
This pendant belongs to a series of work inspired by and started at the 2019 ‘Puhoro ō mua, Puhoro ki tua’ International Indigenous Artists Gathering held at Tūrangawaewae marae, Ngāruawāhia by Te Ātinga, the Visual Arts Committee of Toi Māori Aotearoa.
