Whiriwhiria presents the latest weaving from a group of Māori weavers connected to the Kāpiti Coast township of Ōtaki.
Our whanaungatanga is based on long-standing weaving relationships formed either through whakapapa, as past and present weaving tutors at Te Wānanga o Raukawa or exhibiting artists at the Toi Matarau Gallery in the Māoriland Film Hub.
We have come together to organise the 2022 Weavers National Hui at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, a biennial gathering of Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa, the national group of Māori weavers, and supported by Toi Māori Aotearoa.
Whiriwhiria demonstrates our broad base of weaving experience and profiles individual creative expression. Each artist has a distinctive style and their weaving exemplifies dexterity in form and woven detail inspired by the rich foundation of ancestral weaving.
